2013 Mazda CX-5 first drive

2013 Mazda CX-5
The 2013 Mazda CX-5, which will go on sale in mid-February, is a handsome, spacious entry in the heart of the compact crossover field, and it provides handling that's second to none and fuel economy that promises to be at or near the top of the class.
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is an all-new entry into the crossover category, and although Mazda won't say it outright, it probably replaces the larger but no more spacious CX-7.

The doors open wide, and the seats are comfortable and spacious enough to seat four six-foot adults on long journeys. The seating height is lower than the tallest SUVs, halfway between that of a car and a truck, which for us was the perfect height--and adds to the sporty feel of the CX-5.

Mazda's new 2013 crossover has only a single engine, a 155-hp 2.0-liter four that features a 13:1 combustion ratio, the highest of any U.S. gasoline engine. It can be paired with a six-speed manual that has nice short Miata-like throws and will account for about 1 in every 10 CX-5s, the company says.

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 corners flat and every facet of the driving experience--acceleration, cornering, braking--is linear and predictable, to the point where there's almost nothing to comment on--it all works as it should, with no remarkable features except how well it functions.

But there's that power shortage, most noticeable in passing or merging. It's more rewarding to drive an underpowered car fast than an overpowered one, and so the CX-5 is rewarding, but we wonder whether family buyers and the stereotypical soccer moms won't balk at having to rev the engine well past 3000 rpm to get what oomph there is.

Mitsubishi Mirage and Concept PX-MiEV II to Make Debut at Tokyo

Mitsubishi Mirage
Mitsubishi resurrected the Mirage name for a new a sub-compact, five-door hatchback that’s only 146 inches long – or, for context, about one inch shorter than the current Mini Cooper hatchback. The five-passenger, front-wheel-drive Mirage is powered by a 1.0-liter inline three-cylinder MIVEC engine with Auto Stop & GO (AS&G) mated to a CVT transmission.

The automaker designed the Mirage to meet the needs of emerging markets and advanced markets alike. According to Mitsubishi, emerging markets need affordable compact cars for maneuverability and drivability; advanced markets need an entry-level model; and both markets need a car with good fuel economy and low carbon emissions that seats five adults comfortably.

Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV II
The Concept PX-MiEV II is a plug-in hybrid PHEV that combines Mitsubishi’s existing EV technology in an SUV body. The hybrid setup increases range over traditional small EV-only city cars. The automaker uses technology lifted from its i-MiEV (or i in the U.S.) electric city car and a conventional gasoline engine. Mitsubishi claims the Concept PX-MiEV II has a range of 800 km (496 miles) and can travel as far as 60 km per liter or fuel consumed.

Nissan EV Quick Charger

Nissan’s new charger is being launched as part of a global collaboration with Japan-based Sumitomo, with the first installations planned for early 2012. Nissan said the new unit will retain the performance of current quick chargers but at around half the size – making for a more compact footprint and easier installation. Through this new charger, which operates on a 480-volt current, charging time for the all-electric Nissan Leaf will be under 30 minutes, from a fully depleted state to 80-percent charged.
